“The most important mission of our society is to encourage involvement and success in music making for teachers, students and all classical guitarists alike. And to foster a community of people who love listening to Classical Guitar"

The Classical Guitar Society of Michigan (CGSM) was founded by noted guitarist and teacher, Joe Fava in 1955. The membership comprises both amateur and professional guitarists who are encouraged to perform at the monthly meetings. This is a great opportunity to share pieces you enjoy playing, to lay ensemble music and just talk with other people who have a similar love for the guitar. Many meetings also have a performance by a featured artist or ensemble. The CGSM provides a forum where guitarists, and all who appreciate the guitar, gather together to play and hear the instrument in a friendly, informal atmosphere. Meetings are usually held at 2pm, one Sunday each month. Check the calendar for exact dates, times and locations, and to see if there's a featured artist or ensemble that month. Admission is free to first time visitor, members and students. All are welcome. Musical events are featured in the newsletter. If you'd like be on our emailing list to receive newsletters and announcements or if you have have any questions, you can contact our president, Brian Roberts at: president.cgsm@gmail.com Thanks! Looking forward to hearing from you and seeing you at the meetings!

CGSM fees: Free Admission for students under 25, first-time visitors & parents accompanying participating children, otherwise there is a modest $5 fee per meeting for non-members, $25 per year for individual membership, $37 per year for family membership. All are welcome!

CGSM Guitar Notes Archive 2011-2012

A Note from our Past President

I would like to welcome everybody to a season of music sharing and music making.  You are invited to join us. I’m looking forward to seeing everybody and hearing their musical offerings, during open play, or just informally during our gathering times, before and after planned parts of the meeting. First time visitors are always welcome and get free admission. This is a great place and time to make new friends, as well as seeing old friends.

The mission of our society is to provide a positive environment for lovers of the classical guitar and our close relatives, the lute and the acoustic guitar, and to share their music with a community who appreciates the intriguing and expressive sounds that come out of these instruments. Our open play is a special opportunity for listeners and players alike, because we are a group of people who are deeply involved in what you are doing and what you are communicating. Open play participation is encouraged for all members and students; one to three pieces up to ten minutes for each soloist or group is recommended.

Also this year we will continue open our meetings with an informal ensemble reading session. This session is open to all present and future society members. We will be playing a variety of music, and will have parts of varying difficulty, so that players at different levels can enjoy making music together. Please join us for the grand sound of many guitars playing together!

Aside from our regular meetings, we will have student recitals and special guest from time to time. Check our webpage and newsletters for more information.

We have a great season ahead of us! Please contact Scott Walter, our new president with any questions or ideas at president.cgsm@gmail.com

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the meetings!
